CO2 Laser vs Fotona® Erbium Laser in Gynecology: Which Is Better?
Learn the differences between the CO2 laser and the Fotona® Erbium laser for vaginal rejuvenation, urinary incontinence, dryness, and vaginal laxity. Evidence-based medical information.
When a woman looks for options to treat vaginal dryness, mild urinary incontinence, vaginal laxity, or symptoms related to menopause, she often comes across information about two main technologies: the CO2 laser and the Erbium laser.
At first glance they may seem similar, since both use laser energy to stimulate the regeneration of vaginal tissues. However, there are important differences in their mechanism of action, clinical indications, and the scientific evidence available.
Today, the Fotona® long-pulse Er:YAG laser is one of the most studied and widely used technologies worldwide in functional and aesthetic gynecology, especially for the treatment of mild stress urinary incontinence, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and vaginal laxity.
HOW DO THE CO2 LASER AND THE ERBIUM LASER WORK?
Both devices work by stimulating the formation of new collagen and promoting tissue regeneration processes.
The CO2 laser uses a wavelength of 10,600 nm and creates controlled micro-injuries in the vaginal mucosa. This process triggers a repair response that can improve tissue hydration and quality.
The Fotona® Er:YAG laser, on the other hand, uses a wavelength of 2,940 nm with a very high affinity for the water present in tissues. This allows it to generate controlled heating that stimulates deep collagen remodeling without causing significant ablation of the vaginal surface.
In practical terms, the goal is not to remove tissue, but to induce a reorganization of the existing collagen and stimulate the formation of new supporting fibers.
WHY DO WE USE THE FOTONA® ERBIUM LASER?
In our practice we exclusively use Fotona® technology with the long-pulse Er:YAG laser, because it currently has one of the largest bodies of published clinical evidence in functional gynecology.
This technology has been studied in multiple countries for the treatment of:
Mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence.
Genitourinary syndrome of menopause.
Vaginal dryness.
Pain during sexual intercourse.
Vaginal laxity after childbirth.
Age-related decline in the quality of vaginal tissues.
Unlike other devices, the Fotona® gynecologic protocol was developed specifically for female intimate applications and is backed by years of clinical follow-up and international scientific publications.
THE FOTONA® ERBIUM LASER AND URINARY INCONTINENCE
One of the most important points is that the Fotona® Er:YAG laser is probably the vaginal laser technology with the strongest scientific support for the treatment of mild stress urinary incontinence.
Urinary incontinence occurs when the tissues that support the urethra and bladder lose firmness, a common situation after pregnancies or during menopause.
The controlled heating generated by the Fotona® laser stimulates collagen remodeling in these supporting structures, improving their strength and helping to reduce involuntary urine leakage in properly selected patients.
For this reason, the treatment is often part of a comprehensive approach that may include pelvic floor exercises and muscle-strengthening technologies such as Emsella® or high-intensity electromagnetic stimulation chairs.
WHAT ABOUT VAGINAL DRYNESS?
Both the CO2 laser and the Erbium laser can improve symptoms related to vaginal dryness and mucosal atrophy.
However, current evidence shows that the Fotona® Er:YAG laser also achieves significant improvement in the hydration, elasticity, and quality of vaginal tissues, while offering additional benefits related to pelvic floor function and support.
As a result, many patients can obtain multiple benefits from a single technology, rather than treating vaginal dryness alone.
DIFFERENCES IN COMFORT AND RECOVERY
Another important difference is the experience during and after treatment.
The Fotona® Er:YAG laser works through controlled, non-ablative heating, which generally allows for a faster and more comfortable recovery.
Most patients can return to their usual activities almost immediately.
Treatments are usually performed on an outpatient basis, without anesthesia and with minimal discomfort during the application.
HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?
The number of sessions depends on the specific concern being treated.
In general, most patients need between 2 and 4 initial sessions, followed by maintenance treatments depending on their age, hormonal status, and clinical progress.
Improvement is usually gradual, since collagen continues to reorganize for several months after treatment.
IS THE CO2 LASER OR THE ERBIUM LASER BETTER?
The answer depends on the therapeutic goal.
The CO2 laser has proven useful mainly in treating symptoms related to vaginal atrophy and dryness.
However, when the goal is also to improve vaginal laxity, strengthen supporting structures, treat mild urinary incontinence, or achieve a more comprehensive functional vaginal rejuvenation, the Fotona® long-pulse Er:YAG laser currently has one of the largest bases of scientific evidence available in gynecology.
That is why it is the technology we use in our practice to treat patients with changes related to childbirth, menopause, vaginal aging, and mild urinary incontinence.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR VAGINAL LASER TREATMENT?
The most common candidates are women who experience:
Mild to moderate urinary incontinence.
A feeling of vaginal looseness after childbirth.
Vaginal dryness.
Pain during sexual intercourse.
Genitourinary syndrome of menopause.
Age-related decline in the quality of vaginal tissues.
The best way to find out whether this treatment is right for you is through a specialized gynecologic evaluation.
RECLAIM YOUR INTIMATE WELL-BEING
Every woman has different symptoms and needs. That is why, before recommending any treatment, we perform a complete evaluation to identify the origin of your symptoms and determine the best therapeutic strategy.
Depending on each case, management may include the Fotona® Er:YAG laser, pelvic floor strengthening with technologies such as Emsella®, local hormone therapy, specialized physical therapy, or reconstructive procedures when necessary.
